BFT Access Control Installation: The Culver City Owner’s Guide

If your BFT keypad, receiver, or access control board has stopped responding, failed outright, or only works when it wants to, we can replace it. Ironworks Gate Co. stocks BFT-compatible access control components for most residential and light commercial BFT systems, and we install them in Culver City for a typical installed price of $450 to $1,100 depending on the part and your existing wiring. Most single-part replacements are completed in one visit.

How owners usually find us: the keypad goes dark, the remote works but the keypad doesn’t, or the gate opens fine but won’t close. Sometimes it’s a dead board after a power surge. Sometimes the buttons have worn through after years of daily use. When the part goes, the gate doesn’t care who’s waiting on the other side of it. We get it back working.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT access control spans several product lines, and the wrong replacement part is a wasted afternoon. The most common units we see in the Culver City area are the BFT Mitto remote systems, the BFT RADIUS and DEIMOS series keypads, and the BFT BRIO and RIGEL control boards paired with swing and slide operators. If your unit says BFT on the keypad cover or receiver module, there’s usually a model number stamped on the inside of the housing or on a label near the terminal block.

Before calling, take a photo of the label and the wiring terminals. That photo saves the first fifteen minutes of the visit, because BFT boards from different generations look alike but accept different receiver frequencies. A 433 MHz Mitto transmitter won’t pair with a 5G-series receiver, and no amount of reprogramming changes that. We stock OEM BFT parts where they matter most, particularly control boards and receiver modules, because aftermarket boards sometimes drop the safety-edge input compatibility that BFT builds into their original design. For keypads and simple accessories, quality aftermarket equivalents work fine, and we’ll tell you when they’re a sensible choice.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently or only after several presses. The membrane contact pads inside BFT keypads wear unevenly after years of use. The number 1 and number 9 keys usually fail first, because those are the most common entry code digits. Once the membrane starts going, it doesn’t recover.
  • Remotes stopped working but the keypad still functions. This points to the receiver module rather than the control board. BFT receiver modules can lose the saved transmitter codes after a power blink, or the receiver itself can fail while the rest of the system stays fine.
  • Gate opens but won’t close, or closes but won’t open, with no error light. The access control board isn’t responding to the open or close command. On older BFT boards, a failing relay contacts the same way a worn switch does: sometimes it catches, sometimes it doesn’t.
  • The keypad backlight works but the input doesn’t register. Power is reaching the keypad, but the data line or the internal decoder has failed. This is more common on units exposed to direct afternoon sun in Culver City, where heat on the plastic housing accelerates internal degradation.
  • A burning smell or a black mark near the board terminals. A power surge or a short in a wire can take out the input circuit on a BFT board instantly. If this happened, don’t run the gate again until the board and the wiring are checked.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Culver City homes, figure on the following installed ranges, which include the part, labor, programming, and testing of the full gate cycle including the safety edges:

  • BFT keypad replacement: $450 to $780 installed
  • BFT receiver module upgrade or replacement: $380 to $620 installed when paired with existing remotes
  • BFT control board replacement: $700 to $1,100 installed, including programming of limits and safety inputs
  • Full access control package with new keypad, receiver, and two remotes: $850 to $1,300 installed

The range comes down to two things: which generation BFT unit you have and whether the existing wiring is in good enough shape to reuse. Price is quoted and agreed before any work starts, and every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Confirm the breaker for the gate is on, and look for a tripped GFCI outlet near the operator. Check whether the keypad housing is cracked or full of moisture, and press each button firmly to see if any respond. If remotes stopped working but the keypad works, fresh remote batteries are a reasonable swap.

Beyond that, this work goes into electrical territory quickly. BFT control boards run on line voltage once the covers come off, and miswiring a new board can take out the safety-edge circuit without you knowing it until someone or something is in the gate’s path. We’ll say it plainly: don’t open the board enclosure and start swapping terminals unless you’re trained for it. Call (619) 350-4659 and we’ll diagnose it properly.
