FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Culver City Owner’s Guide
If you have a FAAC gate with a cracked hinge, a broken weld on the gate frame, or a mounting bracket that’s torn loose, we fix it and we fix it right. Full FAAC welding and fabrication work in Culver City typically runs $280 to $850 installed, depending on what failed and whether we’re repairing in place or fabricating a new component in our shop. Most of these repairs are completed in a single visit.
Here’s how owners usually discover the problem: the gate starts dragging on the ground, or it sags visibly at the latch side, or the opener strains and trips its safety circuit. A weld that held for twenty years finally gave way, usually at the spot where the opener arm attaches to the gate leaf. It is worth looking closely at that joint before anything else, because that is where FAAC-powered gates in Culver City tend to fail first.
We run a full welding and fabrication bench specifically for gate work. That means we can do more than patch a crack: we can cut out the fatigued section, weld in fresh steel, reinforce the hinge area, and send you home with a gate that will outlast the opener mounted to it.
Which FAAC Models This Applies To
We fabricate and weld for the full FAAC lineup you’re likely to find in Culver City: the 390, 400, 402, 412, 415, and 770 swing-arm operators, plus the 844 and S418 slide-gate series and the C720/C721 sliding operators. The welding work itself is not brand-specific, but the mounting geometry is, and that is where FAAC compatibility actually matters. A FAAC 400 swing arm bolts to the gate leaf with a specific bracket pattern and pivot spacing; weld the bracket even a quarter inch off and the opener will bind on every cycle.
Before you call, take a photo of the operator’s data plate if you can. It’ll have the model number and serial. If the plate is gone or unreadable, measure the gate leaf: height, width, and thickness of the frame rail. That is usually enough for us to identify which FAAC series it is. One compatibility gotcha we see often: the FAAC 400 and 402 look nearly identical from the outside, but the 402 uses a different hinge point geometry for heavier gates. If you weld a 400 bracket onto a 402 installation, the gate swings wrong and the motor fights the load from day one. We check the data plate before we strike an arc.
When it comes to metal, we fabricate with the same grade and gauge as the original wherever possible, and we stock steel plate, box tube, and solid round stock in the common Culver City gate sizes. If the original hinge was cast, we do not weld cast to cast; we machine or fabricate a replacement hinge from solid steel. It costs a little more than a patch job, but it is the difference between a hinge that lasts five years and one that lasts twenty-five. For aftermarket equivalents, we will tell you plainly when a fabricated part is the better call over an OEM replacement, which for FAAC often means lead times measured in weeks. We are an independent service company, not affiliated with FAAC, so we stock and fabricate to get your gate working on our schedule, not a distributor’s.
Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags on the latch side and scrapes the driveway. A sag that appears gradually over a few months is usually a hinge weld starting to stretch and tear. The metal fatigues before it breaks clean, so the gate droops first, then cracks.
- A crack you can see at the base of a hinge or where the opener arm mounts. That crack opens and closes every time the gate cycles. It will not get better on its own, and running the opener on a cracked mount is what bends FAAC piston rods and burns out capacitors. Once you can see a crack, the repair is already overdue.
- The gate shudders or hesitates mid-travel. That is often the opener fighting a broken or partially broken weld. The motor senses the added resistance and compensates until it cannot. What feels like an opener problem is frequently a structural one.
- The opener arm feels loose at the gate connection, or the bracket wiggles under hand pressure. Grab the arm where it meets the gate and give it a firm shake. If there is any play at that joint, the mount has begun to fail. A tight mount should feel like it was machined, not like it moves a sixteenth of an inch.
- Rust staining runs down from a hinge or bracket. That stain means water is getting into a crack or pinhole you cannot see yet. In Culver City’s coastal air, rust works fast on unsealed steel. A staining joint today is a broken joint inside a season or two.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For FAAC welding and fabrication in Culver City, plan on $280 to $850 for most jobs. A single hinge crack that we can grind out and reweld in place runs at the lower end. Fabricating a new hinge set, cutting out a rusted bottom rail, and reinforcing the opener mounting plate runs higher. We quote the full price before any work starts, and that is the price on the invoice. No surprises after the fact.
Every welding and fabrication job includes grinding the failed weld out to sound metal, preheating where the steel gauge calls for it, filling with the right rod for the material, and sealing the finished repair so it does not start rusting six months from now. We also re-align the gate after welding so it hangs square and swings true before the opener is re-engaged. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing; if the repair is not right, we come back and make it right. That is not a slogan. That is the way we have worked in Culver City for over 40 years.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can do safely: inspect the gate. Look at every hinge, the opener bracket, and the vertical frame rails with a flashlight. If you can see a crack or heavy rust staining, that is enough information to call us. You do not need to diagnose further.
What we do not recommend: welding it yourself. A FAAC gate leaf under power is a moving load of several hundred pounds, and the weld you put on that hinge is the only thing keeping it attached. If the weld is not penetrated into sound metal, if the gate is not jigged square before you strike an arc, or if a grinder slip nicks the operator cable, you have made a small problem into a large one. Beyond the structural risk, the operator runs on live power, and a hot lead or a touched ground can damage the control board beyond repair. We have fixed enough amateur welds in Culver City driveways to know: the second repair always costs more than the first one would have. If you think the hinge or the mount is going, call us at (619) 350-4659. We will tell you over the phone what we think you are looking at, and the estimate is free.
FAQs
A properly executed weld on a FAAC gate, done with the right rod and sealed against moisture, should last 15 to 25 years in Culver City’s climate. The limiting factor is usually the surrounding original steel, not our repair. If a weld we put down fails inside the 90-Day Done Right Promise window, we return and redo it at no cost, no argument.
It depends on where the crack is and how far it has traveled. A clean crack at the weld toe can usually be ground out and rewelded in place. A crack through the hinge barrel itself, or one that has rusted from the inside out, needs a new hinge fabricated. We make both calls honestly, and we will show you the hinge under bright light so you can see what we see before you approve anything.
Most FAAC welding repairs in Culver City are done in a single visit, often in two to four hours on site. If we are fabricating a new hinge set or a replacement bottom rail, we may need to bring the fabricated piece from our shop, which can add a day or two. We tell you upfront which kind of job yours is before we schedule.
We stock common gate steel sections, hinge stock, and mounting plate material on our trucks, plus the rod and wire we use for gate-grade welding. For FAAC-specific brackets and opener arm connection hardware, we keep the common 390/400/402 series parts on hand and order the rest as needed. We also stock and service parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your FAAC opener shares a driveway with another brand, we can service both on the same visit.
If your FAAC gate has a crack, a sag, or a mount that is coming loose, call us at (619) 350-4659. We answer the phone, we tell you what we think, and we give you a straight price before we ever fire up the welder. The gate should open when you need it to. Everything else is details, and the details are our job.
